William Ross is a homeless veteran living here in Indianapolis. Through the assistance of a social worker at the VA Hospital William calls the Volunteers of America transitional house home for now.

William is a United States Navy veteran who served his country from 1973 to 1975. Between '74 and '75, as a sailor on track to be an E-4 , William experienced a very traumatic event (due to the graphic nature of the event I will not divulge that here). Because of what he experienced it led him to cope thru drug and alcohol dependence and addiction. He was eventually deemed a "burden to command due to substandard behavior and performance" which led to his eventual discharge from the Navy.

William's life since has been riddled with "mental and physical health issues, homelessness, and a growing addiction to drugs and alcohol."

William told me, "I have suffered thru the years and shed so many tears... [the traumatic event] caused my mind to become full of demons trying to break free. They planted seeds and they hatched, sparking in side my brain like a match, no pleasant memories, just the misery of depression, drugs, alcohol, no meaningful relationships, etc. I have lost so many years."

William continued explaining that as "miserable years passed" he was fortunate to receive veteran service at the turn of the century thru the VA Hospital. He was treated for addiction, diagnosed with several ailments and mental health issues including PTSD, sleep disorder, depression, and anxiety.
